Australian user groups

 

The groups listed below are not the only computer user groups in Australia. These were chosen because they had up-to-date websites giving details of current meetings. More will be added as time permits. Some other groups had websites, but it was not possible to determine from them whether the group was still active. Still more groups exist, but do not have a website. Some of these can be located by consulting online listings, such as  Tasmanian Communities Online (http://www.tco.asn.au/ ).

Australian Developers.NETwork

Description: AVBUG has adopted a wider Microsoft .NET direction.

 

Comment: If you are a developer interested in developing for Microsoft environments, this is the group for you.

 


Brisbane PC Users Group (BrisBUG)

Description: Operates Southside and Northside Special Interest Groups. Also resells Internet services.

 

Comment: Brisbug is a non-profit society for PC users, located in Brisbane, Australia. It was formed in 1985 by a small band of enthusiasts who wanted to share their knowledge and enthusiasm for personal computers and the software used on them.

 


Cooloola Computer Group Inc.

Comment: The Cooloola Computer Group is a group of friendly people from all walks of life, interested in working with, or on, IBM compatible Computers. The Group offers workshops and meetings.

 


Launceston Computer Group Inc.

Description: Includes Mac and IBM-compatible computer users.

 

Comment: Guest speakers range from various members who demonstrate their expertise and give tuition on all aspects of PC computing, to workshops and demonstrations from other people in the computing industry.

 


Melbourne PC User Group

Description: Website of Australia's largest computer user group.

 

Comment: The purposes of Melb PC are to provide, on a non-profit basis, education and training to advance the effective utilisation of the personal computer by:

  • advancing computer literacy

  • advancing the art and science of information processing through education and interchange of ideas

  • keeping members abreast of developments in computing and information technology and enabling members to exchange information and experience

  • representing computer users in public debate and by acting and speaking on their behalf where they would be affected by proposed legislation or other regulatory measures

  • providing a forum for the exchange of views amongst computer users and between computer users and the computer industry

  • co-operating supporting or joining with, or in, other organisations with similar purposes

  • undertaking other activities beneficial to the Group


Sunshine Coast Computer Club Inc.

Sussex Inlet P. C. Users Group Inc.

Description: The website serves as both a directory to Sussex Inlet and the local computer users group.

 

Comment: The group aims to provide information, education and guidance in the use of personal computers and to be a worthwhile organisation in the community  Regular meetings and such extra activities as will provide opportunities for members to acquire and practice computer skills are held.

 


Sydney PC Users Group Inc.

Description: The Group is a non-profit self help organization for people who have or own Personal Computers (and Windows focus).

 

Comment: A dozen Special Interest Groups cover most activities like Email, Internet, Digital Devices, Networks, Graphics and Diagnostics plus solutions to your hardware and software questions.

 


Tasmanian Linux User Group

Comment: Taslug is a non-profit group promoting Linux usage in Tasmania. It has an email list and holds meetings and get-togethers in Hobart and Launceston. Other features are planned for the web portal.

 


The PC Users Group

Location: Canberra, ACT
Description: The home page of The Internet Project - a volunteer run Internet Service for members of the PC Users Group (ACT) Incorporated, and the Canberra Chapter of the Australian UNIX and Open Systems Users Group (AUUG).

 

Comment: The PC Users Group (ACT) Incorporated is based in the national capital and has around 1700 members.
